International Friendly

Republic of Ireland v Australia

Republic of Ireland v Australia

Preview: Republic of Ireland will go into this game in a serious frame of mind as they prepare for their World Cup Qualifier, next month against Cyprus. Ireland manager, Giovanni Trapattoni, has a full squad to choose from apart from Coventry striker, Leon Best. The Republic are in good form with 11 games undefeated. Australia were the second team to qualify for next year's World Cup Finals and can therefore afford to experiment with their formation and personel. Missing from the side will be midfielders Jason Culina and Vince Grella, striker Josh Kennedy and defender Craig Moore. Regular captain, Lucas Neill, will start from the bench which means that an inexperienced backline of Kisnorbo, North, Carney, and Williams will line up ahead of in-form veteran keeper, Mark Schwarzer.

Verdict: Australia rarely play 'friendly' friendly games and there will be players giving 100% to ensure a ticket to SA. Striker, Scott McDonald, has hinted that Australia will play a more expansive game today. With players such as Kewell, Cahill and Bresciano in support, Australia do have the weapons to breach a defence that includes Dunne and Kilbane. On the other hand, Australia's backline is very inexperienced at international level and I expect the likes of Keane, Duff, McGeady and Doyle to cause the visitors problems.

Pick: Over 2.25 goals @ 2.11 (188bet,3 units)
Republic of Ireland 0 - 3 Australia
