UEFA Champions' League Group Stages (Matchday 3)

Olympiacos v Standard Liege

Tuesday, 20 October
Olympiacos v Standard Liege

Preview: Following a strong showing in Matchday 1 in the 2-3 loss to Arsenal, Standard put in an indifferent performance at AZ Alkmaar. The reigning Dutch champions controlled the majority of possession (in Matchday 2) and created plentiful opportunities, only for Standard to equalize in the final minute of stoppage time and claim a 1-1 draw. The Greek champions go into this match on the back of some fine domestic form and a battling display at Arsenal in Matchday 2. Despite conceding 2 goals in the dying embers of the match, Olympiacos showed good fighting spirit and a togetherness that Brazilian legend Zico has instilled in the team. In Matchday 1, they defeated AZ Alkmaar 1-0 in Athens. On the injury front, Liege is ofcoarse without Defour while the hosts are likely to miss Diogo while Torosidis is doubtful.

Verdict: Olympiacos is an experienced side in the Champions League format and are a formidable unit in front of their own fanatical fans. It has been 2 years since Olympiacos conceded a goal in Athens (in Champions League) and with 2pts separating themselves from today’s visitors and AZ (hosting Arsenal today), it is a perfect opportunity for the Greek side to cement 2nd spot with a potential gap of 5pts. Standard’s away showing in Matchday 2 was disappointing and they will need to play a lot better than that if they are to have a chance here.

Pick: Olympiacos -0.5AH @1.75 (sbobet, 7 units)
Olympiacos 2 - 1 Standard Liege
